IPC-7711 & IPC-7721 CERTIFIED IPC SPECIALIST (CIS) TRAINING AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

 
Rework…Repair…and Remain Competitive - A Hands-on Approach to the Restoration of Electronic Assemblies
 

STI Electronics Inc. is offering this CIS program teaching industry-approved techniques on through hole and surface mount rework, land, conductor and laminate repair. Students will learn the different types of printed wiring boards, level of repair conformance, and the training and skills appropriate to repair actions based on the procedures from the IPC-7711 Rework of Electronic Assemblies and the IPC-7721 Repair and Modification of Printed Boards and Electronic Assemblies documents.


Who Should Attend?


There are no formal entrance requirements however; candidates must have hand-soldering skills. Training, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance personnel with experience in assembly rework procedures are strongly encouraged to receive this certification.


What does the training cover?


In CIS training, only the introductory module, Common Procedures, is a required element. Other CIS-level modules are taught based on a company's needs. CIS’s are considered certified for two years for any module in which they are trained.


Training Modules Include:


Module 1: IPC POLICIES AND PROCEDURES/COMMON PROCEDURES - This module provides instruction for the policies and procedures, scope, purpose, background, and controls of IPC-7711 and 7721. The process goals and guidelines associated with repair of surface mount and through-hole components, handling, EOS/ESD protection, cleaning, and preheating procedures essential to the rework and repair of assemblies will be reviewed in Module 1. An open book exam will be given at the completion of the class with a 70% score required. - 5 hrs.
 
Module 2: WIRE SPLICING - This module includes lecture, Instructor demonstration for wire splicing, and CIS proficiency in performing a wire splicing application. - 2 hrs.

Module 3: THROUGH-HOLE COMPONENTS - This module includes lecture, Instructor demonstration and CIS proficiency in performing through-hole component removal, land preparation, and component installation in accordance with IPC-7711. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-A-610. - 5 hrs.

Module 4: CHIP & MELF COMPONENTS - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency for removing chip and MELF components, land preparation, and component installation in accordance with IPC-7711. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-A-610. – 4.5 hrs.

Module 5: GULL WING COMPONENTS  - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency for removing SOIC, SOT and QFP components, land preparation, and component installation in accordance with IPC-7711. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-A-610. - 8 hrs.

Module 6: J-LEAD COMPONENTS - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency for removing J-Lead components, land preparation, and component installation in accordance with IPC-7711. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-A-610. - 5 hrs.

 

Module 7: PWB CIRCUIT REPAIR - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency for repairing damaged circuit traces, termination areas, and plated through holes installations in accordance with IPC-7721. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-7721. - 7 hrs.

Module 8: LAMINATE REPAIR - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency of filling burned holes in laminate material, performing surface repair of damaged laminate and repairing damaged plated through holes by eyelet installation in accordance with IPC-7721. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-7721. - 4 hrs.

Module 9: CONFORMAL COATING  - This module includes, lecture, Instructor demonstration, and CIS proficiency for identifying, removing, and replacing conformal coating from PWA's in accordance with IPC-7721. The CIS workmanship shall be graded in accordance with IPC-7721. - 3 hrs.

Each student who successfully completes the course will receive an IPC Rework, Repair, and Modification CIS Certificate of Proficiency. The certificate will indicate which of the 9 Modules was completed.

Upon completion of the IPC Rework, Repair and Modification CIS Proficiency course, CIS’s are certified for two years.  At that time CIS’s will need to attend a recertification course to maintain IPC certification.
